流行や評判や成功、そして自身そのものが作る檻、
そういった檻にアーティストは決して囚われるべきではない

自身も大きなスランプに陥った時期があったというマチスが残したこの言葉を読んだ時、自分の中で強く背筋が伸びた感覚を今でも覚えています。
表現者である作家の作品を他の誰かに「売る」という形で手渡していくこの仕事において、理想と現実のすり合わせが必要となる場面は多種多様な形をもって発生するものと思いますし、私自身もそういった難しい局面には度々遭遇してきました。どのような状況の中でも作家とその作品への敬意を常に忘れたくはないものですが、それでも自分の未熟さと力不足故に、結果として関わって下さるアーティストの方々にこういった檻を作ってしまってはいないかと、あるいは自分自身がそもそも気づかないうちにこういった檻に囚われてしまってはいないかと、常に顧みる姿勢は忘れずにいたいです。
表面的に見れば、画商として私は絵画をはじめとする美術作品と呼ばれる造形物を売る者です。ですが、私自身の感覚としては「絵画と言うモノに置き換えられた生身の人間の精神」を売っていると言った方がしっくりきます。一人の人間が生きる中で獲得した感情や記憶、あるいは培った感性や内情、そういった他者には決して見えるものではないけれど、自分の中には確かに在る宇宙のような広がりを線や形や色などに置き換え、言語とはまた異なる領域から他の人の目にも見えるようにしたものが、いわゆる純粋視覚芸術だと私は思います。その変換作業のプロセスや考え方は作家の数だけ存在するものと思いますが、少なくともそうやって個人の内側から生み出される一枚の絵が全く知らない誰かの心に強く響き、時には涙されながらその絵を眺める人が現れるという事実があること、これがどういう現象であるのかを論理的に説明する言葉を私はまだ上手く持てないでいるのですが、この事実そのものがただ純粋に美しいと感じます。
加速する資本主義社会の価値基準の中で、芸術をはじめとする文化的な財産や価値観が蔑ろに扱われることは、今や珍しい光景ではありません。ですが人間のあらゆる文化的な営みをどう評価していくかは、「人間」と呼ばれる存在をどう評価するかに遠からず結びつくことと私は思います。そしてそれらを完全に蔑ろにしか出来ない日が来るのであれば、自然界の大きな循環から距離を置いて発展してきた人間の歴史とその行く先の未来そのものが、単なる不幸な出来事として終わってしまうような気がしてなりません。
芸術という現象が放つ真価は、まるで透き通る光のようだと私は感じます。目にも見えず手に取ることも出来ないそんな真価を恐れることなく信じ、自分の中で揺るがない魅力として感じ続けることが出来る限り、私は画廊という場所を紡ぐことを自分自身に許可していたいです。

When I read these words by Henri Matisse—one of the greatest artists, known for overcoming difficult slumps—I felt a profound sense of responsibility.
In my work selling fine art, I've encountered many challenging situations where my ideals clashed with undesirable realities. These situations may have troubled other gallerists as well. I never want to lose respect for artists and their artworks. As a gallerist, I must reflect on myself, ensuring that I do not make artists into the kind of prisoners Matisse described—prisoners of himself, style, reputation, or success—because of my own limitations, nor become one myself without realizing it.
If you look at my work, you might think I simply sell things called “fine art.” But what I truly believe I offer is human sensitivity, translated into paintings, drawings, and various other forms of art. Everyone gathers memories and emotions and grows in imagination and sensibility throughout life. These inner worlds are invisible—but they can be made visible when people translate them into lines, shapes, and colors.
I believe pure visual art is created in this way. It is different from expressions through language. There are countless processes and approaches to this kind of translation, just as there are countless artists with unique thoughts. Yet, there is one universal truth: a single artwork can deeply move a person—someone the artist has never met—and even bring tears to their eyes. I don’t have a logical explanation for this truth, but I simply feel it is beautiful.
Today, capitalist society continues to advance, and its values have become sharper and more rigid. It’s not uncommon for cultural assets and values—including art—to be treated without care or respect. But I believe the way we treat cultural movements reflects how we think about human life itself. I fear that human history and the future—developing apart from the cycles of nature—may end in sorrow if we completely discard the cultural expressions that define our humanity.
To me, the true value of human art is like clear sunlight. No one can see or touch it directly, but I want to keep believing in it without hesitation. As long as I continue to think of art as an amazing phenomenon, I allow myself to remain a gallerist.
